Colombian Ambassador to Ghana Pays Courtesy Call On AGAMal

The Colombian Ambassador to Ghana recently visited the AGAMal Offices in Obuasi with a call on AngloGold Ashanti to collaborate  and work together with Colombia in the fight against malaria, which is increasingly becoming world’s number one source of mortality not only in Ghana and other African countries but South America as well.

Her Excellency, Mrs. Claudia Torbay Quintero, noted that malaria is everywhere and the fight against it cannot be won by individual countries but countries have to pull resources together, and with common approach we will gradually win the war against malaria, which mostly kills women and children on daily basis.

From right Mr. Eric Obu Boetey, Mr. Godwin Yamoah, Nana Ampofo Berkoe and Mrs. Claudia Turbay Qunitero with her entourage being briefed about Malaria Control.

HE Quintero was happy with the AGAMal setup and urged the staff to keep up what they are doing, making sure the programme continues to benefit not only the Obuasi communities but the country as a whole, adding that “I’m happy AGAMal is upscaling the programme in other regions”.

In his earlier presentation, Mr. Eric Obu Buetey - Head of Operations, Communications and Research of AGAMal briefed the ambassador on the operations of AGAMal in the Upper East and West, Western, Central and Ashanti Regions  and said AGAMal takes fair credit for literally saving lives of thousands of Ghanaians from the scotch of the malaria disease. “We have also reduced absenteeism among workers, market women, farmers and school children especially in areas where we  have sprayed”, Mr. Buetey said.

HE Mrs Quintero also took the opportunity  to visit  AGAMal’s ultramodern entomology  laboratory where more light was thrown on key facts about transmission of malaria from mosquitoes. “Plasmodium parasites causing malaria are spread to people through the bite of infected anopheles mosquitoes which bites mainly at night in hot and humid areas where they can breed   easily”, Mrs. Rosemary Ampofo, a biologist at the laboratory explained.
