2016 AGAMAL SPRAY SEASON CONCLUDES SUCCESSFULLY

The 2016 AGAMal spraying season concluded successfully in eleven districts of the Upper West Region and the Obuasi municipality with a call on partners to increase their support for the cause of malaria elimination in Ghana.

During the season, a four-member team from the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund, visited AGAMal operations in Obuasi to observe key activities of the programme.

They participated in a community sensitisation programme at Ntonsua and also visited the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital where the malaria data continues to show evidence of the success of the Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) intervention. The delegation also visited the AGAMal Insectary and laboratory to get first-hand information on the IRS processes.

The Program Director of AGAMal, Mr. Sylvester Segbaya, indicated that a total population of 719,122 benefited from the spray operations which provided short term employment for 627 people in the Upper West Region.

Due to the closure of the mine, Obuasi recorded a total beneficiary population of 119, 835 which is lower compared to 2015. Some community members declined spraying, citing the absence of mosquitoes as the reason.

Mr. Segbaya attributed the success of the spray season to the highly motivated spray operators who faced harsh weather conditions in the Upper West Region with great commitment. He also at-tributed success to the intensive communication strategy, dubbed ‘Mind the Gaps”, which placed emphasis on the need for households to screen their windows, doors and to cover the eaves of their houses as an effective complimentary malaria control measure.

“AGAMal is committed to ensuring the roll out of best practices in the eradication of malaria. In 2017, more efforts would be put in the IRS operations and advocacy for the acceptance of house screening in communities. We view this as our contribution to the Agenda 2030, Malaria Elimination Campaign for the country”. Mr. Sylvester Segbaya said.

The AGAMal management team expressed their appreciation to the Global Fund and AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited for their immense and continuous support.
