AGAMaL Deploys New Resistance Breakthrough Insecticide (SumiShield 50WG) in 4 Districts

AngloGold Ashanti Malaria Control Limited (AGAMaL), is going to use SumiShield 50WG in 4 of its 12 operational districts in the 2018 spray season. The districts that are selected to use the new insecticide are Obuasi Municipal, Nadowli, Sissala West and Jirapa Municipal. This Indoor Residual Spray is the latest breakthrough technology to control resistant malaria transmitting mosquitoes. This product is based on the Neonicotinoid clothianidin (IRAC Class 4), a new chemistry for Vector Control.

According to the Head of Operations, Mr. Malik Kofi Assan, the water dispersible granule (WG) formulation makes the insecticide dissolve in water easily.

In another development, the resident Entomologist, Mr. Kwame Desewu has recommended the new insecticide following results from the insecticide susceptibility tests conducted by the Entomological Research Unit of AGAMaL. The result confirmed that SumiShield is effective against susceptible and resistant mosquitoes and has good contact activity. It is expected to address some program implementation challenges and increase community acceptance with the odorless and non-staining properties of the new insecticide.

SumiShield was also tested in Japan, Cote d’Ivoire, Tanzania, India, Democratic Republic of Congo and Benin. In all these tests SumiShield proved to be highly effective against both susceptible and resistant Anopheles. It also allows rotation with other IRS products, in line with WHO Global Plan for Insecticide Resistance Management (GPIRM). This provides a valuable tool for use alongside other vector control interventions. It has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Ghana for use in Public Health.

AGAMaL once again is setting the pace as the first Ghanaian company to partner SUMITOMO Japan, to move a notch higher in the fight against the malaria vector.

Our Goal

To contribute to the reduction of diseases of public health importance, in line with national and international priorities.
