Local health leaders said the fall in malaria across the area is largely down to indoor residual spraying (IRS).<sup class=\"cite\"><a href=\"#src-1\" aria-label=\"Source 1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n        <h2>Malaria among schoolchildren has fallen sharply<\/h2>\r\n        <p>Malaria prevalence among schoolchildren in Obuasi has dropped from <strong>46% in 2006 to 0.9%<\/strong> today. Mavis Nana Yaa Kyei, the mine&#8217;s Gender Superintendent in charge of social development, credited the IRS programme as the main reason.<sup class=\"cite\"><a href=\"#src-1\" aria-label=\"Source 1\">1<\/a><a href=\"#src-2\" aria-label=\"Source 2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n        <blockquote>More work is needed to eliminate the disease, even after sustained reductions in cases.<\/blockquote>\r\n        <p>Obuasi Municipal Director of Health Charity Afrifa-Adjei made that point at the event. The Municipal Chief Executive, Faustilove Appiah-Kanin, urged continued commitment, noting that malaria remains a major public health challenge in Ghana.<sup class=\"cite\"><a href=\"#src-1\" aria-label=\"Source 1\">1<\/a><a href=\"#src-2\" aria-label=\"Source 2\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n        <h2>What the programme has delivered<\/h2>\r\n        <p>AGAMal, which the Obuasi Mine established, now protects about <strong>1.4 million people across 16 districts<\/strong> and has created <strong>more than 1,450 direct jobs<\/strong>.<sup class=\"cite\"><a href=\"#src-1\" aria-label=\"Source 1\">1<\/a><\/sup> Its 2025 spray campaign alone covered 1,450,136 people.<sup class=\"cite\"><a href=\"#src-3\" aria-label=\"Source 3\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n        <h2>Free care for residents<\/h2>\r\n        <p>The mini clinic offered free outpatient care, including malaria, HIV and AIDS testing and treatment, and dental and eye care.<sup class=\"cite\"><a href=\"#src-2\" aria-label=\"Source 2\">2<\/a><\/sup> More than 7,000 people have received free health screening over the past four years, with support from the AGA Health Foundation, the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Health Foundation, the Underground Mining Alliance and the Ghana Health Service.<sup class=\"cite\"><a href=\"#src-1\" aria-label=\"Source 1\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\r\n        <p>The 2026 World Malaria Day theme was &#8220;Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can.
